Nina Turner ran in 2014 to unseat the Republican incumbent for Secretary of State in Ohio. Turner, then a state senator, lost in the general election. She currently co-chairs Bernie Sanders’s 2020 presidential campaign.
Turner served as state senator for the 25th district from 2008 to 2015. She served on the Cleveland City Council from 2006 to 2008.
Prior to joining the Sanders campaign, Turner was president of Our Revolution, a progressive org the Vermont senator created after the 2016 election cycle (she remains on the board). She has also taught African-American History, US History, Urban Studies, and Political Science at Cuyahoga Community College.
Turner grew up in a single-parent, poverty-stricken household, the oldest of seven siblings.
