LPAC Praises Sen. Tammy Baldwin for Leading on the Respect for Marriage Act

Washington, D.C. (November 30, 2022) – Statement from LPAC, the only organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ women to local, state, and federal office, regarding U.S. Senate passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.

The passage of the Respect for Marriage Act in the United States Senate on November 29, 2022 is an important step for protecting LGBTQ equality. This achievement would not have been possible without the tireless advocacy of U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin. We owe her a debt of gratitude.

"Sen. Baldwin is a trailblazer and icon for the LGBTQ community," said LPAC Executive Director Lisa Turner. "As the first openly LGBTQ woman ever elected to the U.S. House, and later the first LGBTQ person elected to the U.S. Senate, Baldwin has lived out and proud in the public eye for decades. The passage of this bill is a testament to Baldwin's legislative prowess, determined leadership, and hard work over many years."

This is an amazing bipartisan achievement and deserves to be celebrated. LPAC also recognizes that there is more work to do. If the Supreme Court overturns Obergefell, legally-performed same-sex marriages will be recognized across the country, but dozens of states will stop issuing marriage licenses to their LGBTQ residents. Same-sex couples in those states will be foced to travel to legally be wed. LPAC looks forward to the day when marriage equality is fully enshrined in U.S. federal law.
