LPAC Responds to Reintroduction of The Equality Act
April 30, 2025 — Washington, D.C. –Today, LPAC, the nation’s only organization dedicated to advancing the political representation of LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary candidates, responded to news that House and Senate Democrats have reintroduced the Equality Act, a landmark civil rights bill that would make sexual orientation and gender identity protected classes in employment, housing, education, public accommodations, jury service, and federally funded programs.
“The majority of Americans believe that LGBTQ+ people should be treated fairly,” said Janelle Perez, Executive Director of LPAC. “The Equality Act would simply codify those protections into law, ensuring that LGBTQ+ people can access employment, education and other public services without fearing discrimination based on who they are or who they love.”
“The bill that we’re here to talk about could not be more straightforward or commonsense,” LPAC-endorsed Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), the first openly gay person elected to the Senate, said Tuesday. “The Equality Act simply puts into law what we all believe: that every American is created equal and should be treated equally under the law. This is a tenant of our nation’s founding.”
“In 2019, I helped pass the Equality Act as an advocate — with support from both Democrats and Republicans,” LPAC-endorsed U.S. Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Del) told The Advocate. “Today, as a member of Congress, I’m proud to help lead its reintroduction — because no one should be denied safety, dignity, or opportunity because of who they are. The Equality Act is not about politics; it’s about ensuring freedom and fairness for every American.”
