Laphonza Butler to become first Black, openly LGBTQ woman to serve in either chamber of Congress

Washington, D.C. (October 2, 2023) – Lisa Turner, Executive Director of LPAC, the only national organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ women and nonbinary people to public office, releases the following statement on the appointment of Laphonza Butler to the U.S. Senate:

"LPAC applauds the appointment of Laphonza Butler to the United States Senate. She will be the third openly LGBTQ woman to serve in the U.S. Senate, and the first Black, openly LGBTQ woman to serve in either Congressional chamber. As a leader in the labor movement, Butler has been an ally and advocate for working people in California. More recently, she has been a champion for electing pro-choice women across the country. We look forward to seeing her good work for California and the nation."
